Art Deco Lamp Section launched
At Canonbury the roaring 20s has to be one of our favoured epochs - it seemed like a swell time to be alive, all those glittering parties, raunchy flappers, Champagne and the general air of debauched opulence. Aesthetically the art deco era produced some great works of art, furniture, bronzes and art deco lamps.
I'd like to say particularly in the bronze sculptural medium the artists of the 1920s really made the time come to life. Artists like DH Chiparus , Leverrier, Preiss, Joe Descomps, Lalique and Colinet, to name a few really nailed it in terms of creating wonderful figural works.
Of course, many of these pieces make for great lamps, whether its a full sized Biba floor lamp or one of the smaller Clarte table lamps, our art deco lamp range is second to none.
The art deco era created this idealised version of female beauty that just works so well in the bronze lamp medium. The girls are lithe and athletic, stylised with cubist form, the pinnacle of female form. The artists of the 20s also seemed to be fascinated by exotic dancers, erotic dancers, Egyptian forms, flappers, Harlequin clowns, bathing costume beauties with short cropped hair - the deco cut - with elongated limbs and a neat symmetry.
