A discussion of Moreau bronzes isn’t complete without mentioning the men behind some of the most widely-known sculptures in the world. The patriarch of the family, Jean Baptiste Moreau is credited with starting a long tradition of art that has left a lasting legacy on the art world. He was born in 1656 and lived until 1733. He worked as a painter and sculptor for almost all of his life.
The older Moreau is credited with initiating his two sons Auguste Moreau and Mathurin Moreau into the world of sculpture. Each of the Moreau sons made his contribution to the world of art by making distinctive pieces of art.

Auguste debuted at the Salon where he made regular exhibitions until 1913, concentrating on subjects like allegories, pastorals, and genre scenes. He had a realistic, graceful style that was somewhat similar to those of his father and brother. It is not uncommon for people to confuse between Auguste Moreau and Mathurin Moreau but each of the two made his mark with distinctive work. The following are some of his well-known works:

Mathurin, the second of the Moreau brothers was the first to start exhibiting his sculptures in the Salon in 1948. His produced outstanding work, earning him a medal of honor in 1897, becoming the mayor of Paris’ 19th arrondissement. In 1912, the year he died, a Parisian street was named after him, cementing his name in the history of the great city.
Between them, the father, and the Moreau brothers have several bronze sculptures with each signing on what they had produced. When looking for Moreau bronzes, you should check out for the signature appearing on the sculpture. It is likely to be that of Jean Baptiste Morea, Auguste Moreau, or Mathurin Moreau. If it doesn’t have a signature from any of these individuals, then it is unlikely to be a Moreau bronze.
