Victorian chest of drawers was made during the British Victorian era (1837-1902). They are, therefore, some of the most collectible antiques you can find on the market. Queen Victoria loved ornate pieces, greatly influencing furniture design during her reign. However, there’s nothing like a unique Victorian chest of drawers since furniture makers tended to borrow heavily from the gothic, neoclassic, rococo, Elizabethan, and Tudor styles.
Unless you’re an antique dealer, it can be difficult for you to identify a Victorian chest of drawers when you see it. But that doesn’t mean that it’s difficult for you to learn how to pick one from the crowd. The following are some of the subtle features to help you tell a Victorian chest of drawers from other antiques:

Victorian furniture is unlike that from the 18th-century Georgian era. Instead of mahogany and oak, Victorian pieces were made from Flamed Mahogany and walnut for a more decorative finish. Chests of drawers during that time were almost exclusively made from mahogany, which was imported from overseas British colonies. Once the framework for a chest of drawers was done, designers applied flame mahogany veneers for a grand appearance.

Chests of drawers from the Victorian period had a bow or simple square fronts with rounded edges and corners. Even though the less grand pieces had pine veneers, they often had flame mahogany veneer finishing.
Victorian chests of drawers had two types of feet – block or turn bun feet. Both of these types of feet are key in providing stability for heavy pieces of furniture. Besides, the drawers had turned knobs as drawer handles, a departure from the metal swing handles of the Georgian era. Therefore, the handles are one of the main distinguishing factors between chests of drawers from the Victorian and Georgian eras.
The Scottish chest is an excellent example of the Victorian Chest. Instead of England, it was made in Scotland but with the same basic features. However, the Scottish chest stands several inches taller than the quintessential Victorian pieces and has shaped or curved drawers to the top. It also has carved wooden mountings to the base and sides, a feature you wouldn’t find in other chests of drawers from that era.
