The first tables were made from mahogany or satinwood. Later on, designers used Chinese-style lacquer, papier-mache, and so on. The tables were created in threes or fours so that smaller tables could fit under the bigger ones.
18th-century nest of tables was placed close to the wall when in storage. When they needed to be used, they would be moved to the appropriate place. For example, teatime meant a small table being combined by a chair. Once teatime was over, the table would be moved back to storage. When permanent tables were invented, people still bought a nest of tables for various reasons. Game boards would be placed on the smaller table when needed. When visitors cane unexpectedly, they would have their dishes placed on these tables.
