We seem to have had a busy spate of buying breakfront bookcases of late - and as they take up so much room in our North London / Herts gallery we'd love to sell some. I'd like to say it's one of the largest selections of breakfront bookcases on the web. We have Victorian and Regency breakfronts in both walnut and mahogany as well as open ones and a nifty version with a secretaire - or desk - built into the front. A great space saving device and perfect for your home office set up. Or even better if you are a writer you can have your fold down desk writing surface and be immediatedly surrounded by all your lovely books and tomes.
The term breakfront of course gets it's meaning from the protruding mid section that sticks out, I imagine for both aesthetic (looks good) and practical (more storage) purposes. It can be applied to all sorts of furniture, we have breakfront sideboards and cabinets as well as the typical bookcase. The larger breakfront bookcases are great for a home library set up, assuming you have the space. In the digital age I am aghast at the move to reading everthing on disgusting bright screen so isn't it lovely to have a large wooden bookcase to store all your real books?
The typical breakfront will have the glass fronted upper section for storing books or displaying decorative pieces. The bottom section will be the enclosed cabinet section. The top half comes apart from the bottom section so it is easy to move around - well easy if you are very strong and perhaps in younger years! I've moved these around a lot in my time, they're a back breaker.
Many of these breakfront bookcases are on display in our North London / Herts Canonbury Antiques showroom so please get in touch for an appointment. We are only 25 minutes north of London. We also have a lot of related products to these large bookcases - things like library steps. We also have my favourite product ever which is the metamorphic chair / library steps, an ingenous Victorian space saving multi-tasking product rolled into one, both a comfy chair and a step ladder normally designed for a large library.
