The Regency Lido Theatre in Newport Beach California really is a gorgeous art deco gem.
Almost thirty years ago as a young boy I did my art A Level project on the Tropical Deco architectural movement as found in South Beach Miami. So you could say there is a long term obsession with all things art deco - and the Regency Lido Theatre does not disappoint. It's the classic streamlined art deco look - perfectly symmetrical with angular lines.
The theatre opened in 1938 and the first film that played there was Bette Davis in 'Jezebel'. Legend has it that Davis lived nearby in Corona Del Mar and asked the then owner to open with her film. Inside are a plethora of lovely architectural features including parlor stools, gorgeous tiling and hand painted designs on all walls with a nautical theme including dolphins and other sea creatures.
The theatre was recently lovingly restored including the Catalina tile which was originally installed in the 1930s by an Italian family. The ticket booth is something else outside under the Grand Marquee entrance foyer with distinctive neon lights in star motifs. As part of the restoration an excellent sound system was installed and the theatre is great for premiers and parties - many of them for the surf industry.
