Why not make a day out of it when visiting the Canonbury Hertfordshire antiques showroom and visit our local town of St Albans? Well actually, as it has a cathedral, it's officially a city. St Albans is just ten minutes down the road from our gallery so very easy to visit and well worth your time.
(Saint Alban. A martyr)
St Alban's is Hertfordshire's oldest town and was originally a Roman city called Verulamium on the site of a Catuvellauni settlement. Today you can still visit the Roman ruins. The town is also a beautiful, traditional market town with great eating, drinking and shopping. In fact you can visit Ye Olde Fighting Cock (circa 793) pub in the town, which is said to be the oldest pub in England by the Guinness Book of Records. We always send our American and German clients that way and they always love it and it's just down the road from our Hertfordshire antiques showroom. Let us know if there are any other food or drink places you have in mind and we can reccommend our favourite haunts.
(Roman theatre. In ruins )
The town gets it's name from Saint Alban who is venerated as Britain's first Christian martyr. St Alban was beheaded by the Roman's in the town in the 3rd or 4th century as part of their campaign of persecution of the Christians. The town is packed with other history from over the centuries, including a sacking by Boudica as leader of the Iceni in 61. It also played a prominent part in the War of the Roses with running battles on it's streets.
