Art Deco is a style that sprung in the 1920s, encompassing furniture design, architecture, art, jewellery, etc. Having first emerged in 1908, the Art Deco movement spread in Europe in the 1920s and America in the 1930s.
Borrowing heavily from the Arts & Crafts and Art Nouveau styles, Art Deco emphasized decorative elements like continuous vertical lines, symmetry, geometry, abstraction, and fragmented forms. The decorative pieces made at that time had plain shapes and forms with fine geometric lines.
Furniture pieces made in the Art Deco style were inherently decorative and ornamental. Besides the clean shapes, the furniture had bright and strong colours. Artists used expensive materials to make the furniture.
